Phototaking Day! At long last, AMKSS is taking yearbook photographs! It is so late this year that I had almost given up hope of seeing a yearbook for 2009. Class and council scheduled on the same day. Fancy that. Too bad the choir pic wasn't on the same day as well.

Despite the fact that I have all the tests looming up, today was a most pleasant day for all in my class. Everyone was super zi high... I wasn't called a KANGaroo today too=)

Yu Hang and I have taken to reading the English Dictionary when we're bored in class. We've even come up with a game that helps us randomly pick a page number and a new word to learn(we were doing this in assembly while Mr Ong was talking about the Amksian awards, and yes, it was in the hall...). Somehow or rather though we ended up stuck in P, because of interesting words like Perspicacuity(adj)-a clear or sharp understanding, Perspicacious-keeness of understanding, Not to be confused with the former, Perspicuity-clearness in expressing one's thoughts and Potash-potassium carbonate, which I have since discovered is an active ingredient in bomb making(weird much).

Backtracking to earlier in the day. During Bio, following Mrs Veda's announcement of the lifescience programme during Conquer O, I suceeded in confusing myelf and Yu Hang with the following thoughts and questions. One question led to another, so yeah...

Questions for the day:
Cancer is a genetic mutation of cells where cells do not do their specific functions, and instead multiply out of control. Unfortunately, as the genetic code of these cells are not unusual in our bodies, the white blood cells do not attack these cells as they are seen as part of the body and therefore not harmful.

1.Would it not be possible to alter this state by injecting something into these cells to alter the way the white blood cells react(though this would not be plausible in cases like bone cancer)?
Ans: Introduction of genes into stem cells have been able to decrease toxicity, and there are many ways of gene transfer into cells. Because viruses can deliver genes with high efficiency, this method is commonly used to introduce genetic material. However, nonviral transfer methods have fewer saftey issues, and it is easer to produce clinical grade material for nonviral cell transfers. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find anything that is more similar to what I was thinking about, so I have to keep searching I guess.

2.Would it be harmful to the surrounding cells that are serving their purpose?
Ans: Unfound as it is related to the former question.

3.What are existing methods of cancer treatment and how effective are they?
Ans: There are experimental drugs, gene therapy, bone marrow transplants, treatment vaccine therapy, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, along with so much more. However, the last two, in killing cancerous cells also cause severe pysiological alterations to normal tissue and body functions. Severe side effects include toxicities in many body systems and organs, due to permanent killing of the healthy cells around the cancerous ones.

4. When do the genes in these cells start mutating and what triggers it?
Ans:Nothing helpful on the internet, so i guess I'll have to ask my teacher.

5.How many types of cancer are there?
Ans:
Amazingly, there are cancers that come under all letters except for D,F,J, X, Y,and Z. Most common however(and the ones I can pronounce)are-bladder cancer, melanoma, breast cancer, Non-hodgkin Lymphoma, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, Endometrical cancer, prostate cancer, Kidney(renall cell)cancer, skin cancer(non melanoma), leukemia, thyroid cancer, lung cancer.

6.How does one test for cancer in a patient anyway?
Some ways include digital mammography, ultrasound, biopsy, MRI scans,PET scans and x-rays and body fluid samples(most common methods of detection).

7.How do syringes work?
Ans: A syringe is a large tube with a plunger inserted in one end and the other end resulting in a smaller tube (the needle). Older syringes used to be made mainly of glass and metal, but modern syringes are constructed of lighter plastic and only have metal in the needle portion.Filling an empty syringe is accomplished by inserting the needle into a bottle or reservoir of liquids and pulling the plunger back, causing suction. This draws the liquid into the syringe and readies it for injection into the body. The needle's point is sharp enough to penetrate the skin easily and acts as a conduit for the liquid inside the syringe to be inserted (or "injected") into the body. The liquid is forced from the syringe by pushing the plunger toward the needle end of the syringe.
